About This Service

Retaining Walls for homeowners across Central NC.

A retaining wall is a structural project first and a design feature second. North Carolina's clay soil holds water and expands, which puts real pressure on a wall that isn't built correctly. We install a proper compacted base and a drainage system behind every wall, gravel backfill and, where needed, a drain line, so water moves through the wall instead of building up behind it and pushing it out over time.

We build with either segmental block, which is engineered specifically for retaining applications and holds up well on steeper grades, or natural stone, which blends more into a wooded or established landscape. For taller walls or steep lots, we design in tiers, which spreads the load across multiple shorter walls instead of one tall one and often looks better too.

Beyond holding back a slope, a retaining wall is useful space. We regularly build in planting beds on top, or cap a wall at seat height so it doubles as extra seating around a patio or fire pit.

Frequently Asked

Common questions about retaining walls.

Water that builds up behind a wall creates hydrostatic pressure, which is the leading cause of walls bowing or failing over time. Gravel backfill and proper drainage let water pass through instead of pushing against the wall.
